MODIFICATIONS TO DIXIE - BY RAY MAY
From the start I did not like running with the tank top off to get at the hand – pump, so I put the pump in between the left hand coal bunker and the boiler. The holding down bolts are used to mount the pump on a small angle.
I also extended the control rod (for the water supply valve under the saddle tank ) through to the footplate, but perhaps the biggest modification I have made is to make a radial axle for the loco which fits under the cab footplate. It is held in with a pin through the frames and seems to work very well.
It stops the hunting which is common to short wheelbase 0-4-0 locomotives. Two small arches have to be cut out of the frames to allow the wheels to slide sideways on corners, the brake gear will also need altering to clear the wheels.
I hope everything will be clear from my diagram.
